The Derivative Identity: How Calculus and Conservation Are the Same Thing
The conservation law is structurally isomorphic to the derivative. All five calculus rules hold. The product rule IS mutualism. Every PSUR is an instance of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Five Calculus Rules
Every one holds under the conservation law.
1. The Derivative
Existence is the rate of departure from void. Just as f'(x) measures how fast a function leaves its current value, existence measures how fast a system departs from nothing.
2. The Chain Rule
Nested existence multiplies. When one system's existence feeds into another's, the total existence is the product of each layer's rate. A signal detected in FAERS that triggers a regulatory action that changes clinical practice — each link multiplies.
3. The Product Rule
Joint existence equals mutual persistence. When two systems exist together, their combined existence is:
Existence of A times persistence of B, plus persistence of A times existence of B.
The product rule IS mutualism. Each system's existence is weighted by the other's persistence. If either stops persisting, the product collapses.
4. Integration
Accumulated existence recovers state plus void. Integrate all the existence over an interval and you get back to the raw material: current state plus the constant of integration (which is void — the starting condition you cannot recover from the derivative alone).
Void is the constant of integration. You can differentiate it away, but it is always there, silently constraining what existence can be.
5. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
The sum of existence over a boundary interval equals the net state change.
Every Periodic Safety Update Report (PSUR) is an instance of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. A PSUR sums all adverse event existence over a reporting period and produces net state change — the difference between the safety profile at the start and end of the interval.

Why Metrics Disagree on Magnitude
Because boundary is a PERSPECTIVE. Same state, different boundary.
One base operator, three corrections:
- PRR = base ratio
- ROR = PRR with prevalence correction
- IC = log base 2 of PRR with marginal correction
- EBGM = PRR with Bayesian shrinkage
Each correction adds epistemic caution: prevalence, information surprise, sample size trust. They are not competing measures — they are the same measure viewed through different lenses.
The Crystalbook Connection
The eight laws are not a one-to-one mapping but a weighted covering. Boundary gets three guards (dissolution, misimport, inversion) because it is the FUNCTION in the equation. Functions fail more ways than data.
Guard count is proportional to the power of the term.
Open Questions
- IC diverges from log2(PRR) by 1.33 bits for high-volume drugs. The boundary family model is first-order, not exact.
- Does existence need a standalone metric beyond the choice of boundary?
- Can new boundary operators be discovered? Each new boundary operator equals a new signal detection method.
